Blanca Aviles Submitted by: Jenny Aviles Rodriguez on 06.11.10 3:03 PM I realize it's passed your May deadline to nominate a Nurse but I can't tell you how important it is for me to put out my mother's story. My mother is a true Nurse Hero to me and to my family. Since I was a little girl she has been the pillar of strength to us all by choosing to take care of my terminally ill Father. Let me back up and share a bit of their history together. My mother fell madly in love with my father. You see my father, was a handsome strong and loving beautiful man who was born Albino. She married very young and did not finish high school but when my sisters and I were born she realized my father's health was increasingly worse and would eventually need to be cared for, full time. She would have to become the sole provider. She was determined to help my father progress and keep our family strong and so ensued her journey to become a Registered Nurse. My mother not only became a succesful nurse but she took care of us, worked full time and still made time to study & observe my father's condition in order to recognize causes, symptoms proper treatments and tests all to help research progress. My father was eventually diagnosed with Hermansky Pudlock Syndrome, a genetic metabolic disorder which is the actual cause of albinism, visual impairment, and a platelet dysfunction with prolonged bleeding. In those days not too many doctors knew what this disorder was. My mother took on this mission to gather years of observations, symptoms etc. and educate anyone who would listen to her. Before she knew it, a team of doctors reached out to her and explained about their own research with Albinism and so a relationship grew and the mission began. From the HPS my father later developed pulmonary fibrosis. My mom kept in close contact with these dr's and scientist and traveled to DC and Shands in FLorida seeking answers and sharing the observations she encountered while caring for us & my Dad. It was her feedback that was used time and time again in National HPS organizations that still today continue to progress in their research and have gone on to help prolong the lives of many who suffer from HPS. My mom even went as far as printing "credit card" size copies of information on HPS and passing them out to people we saw in the streets with Albinism. All for the sake of informing and saving lives. That is why my mother is my Nurse Hero. I loved my Dad so very much & so did my 3 sisters. We hold his memory close to our heart and we are so thankful to Mom for taking care of Dad Thank you mom for your perserverance & determination to pass on what you learned. We know it was a difficult journey and a painful one at that, to see the love of your life's health slowly deteriorate and yet you kept him in good spirits and laughing and always feeling loved. It's because of you Mom, that so many families have become aware of HPS and can help their loved ones in their journey with such a complex disorder. My father came to visit from out of state and due to unforeseen circumstances became terminally ill. While hope was running out while at a nearby hospital, Kathleen and her wonderful staff at the Florida Hospital Transplant Facility were angels sent from above. My family can not thank Kathleen enough for getting my father the care he so desperately needed. God bless her and the wonderful doctors/staff who literally saved my father's life. |

As far I know she hasn’t performed an emergency tracheotomy with a ball point pen or delivered twins in a cab. What she is is a kind and gentle spirit that treats me and my family with respect, compassion, confidence, dignity and always with a smile! Of course she goes out her way everyday like all dedicated and devoted nurses; but she’s my nurse and therefore my everyday nurse hero. |

LPN Rita Clayton Submitted by: KRISTI RIDDICK on 05.24.10 11:03 AM Rita is the greatest LPN at the Arbor Villages rehab/nursing home she goes out of her way to please every resident she has she gives her whole heart and soul to the residents she helps people even when they need it weather it is her job or not.... when I needed to be transferred to the bed and she really helped me transfer from the wheelchair to the bed also she goes out of her way to tell the kitchen if the meal is wrong when I needed my bandages replaced or when I needed my cast wrapped she went and got the stuff to wrap it and wrapped it when I asked her to... when I asked for a pain pill she gave it to me she didn't wait 3 hrs before she responded like others did she will let you know why she couldn't if she can't give it to you she does some of the aides work if they don't do it she always answers questions and comforts people when their blue she greats you with a smile... Rita also never complains about her job or get rude with patients like other do Rita always helps you in anyway she can everyone here in Arbor Villages love her she is in my book is the best LPN I have ever known she really loves and cares for each patient to their needs she is a wonderful LPN at Arbor Villages Wildwood Florida |

I'm to transfer pen to paper how she gave me hope in a less then hopeless 4 days in the ICU. Her name is Maggie Joseph. i was amitted on a afternoon and was in very bad condition. i could only remember how i would see her in and out of my room. As i recovered she help me understand how i got there and how to get better, but more then that she put loving care in how i was so afraid being told how bad in my mine thing was. she be came a good friend when, as i felt i was so alone. I look forward to her comming to my home as she is a godsend fo my wife and I... I have alot wrong with me and she takes my mind off all my problems and I have many, Besides being my home nurse she is like a sister to us.... She listens to what I have to say and talks to me as a person not somebody she has to go see.... she is family in my book and my wife and I just love her and will do anything in our power to help with any problems she has if we can.... She says I should call her if I needed anything no matter what time it is, I suffer from deep depression and she actually makes me laugh when she is in my home.... I can't saw enough about this wonderful woman and I wish every person was like her, Then we would be in a perfect world...... I may be a senior and more than twice her age but this girl means the world to myself and my wife and I am very very lucky to have known her in my lifetime.... I want the world to know how lucky I am to have her this late in my life..... The short time she has been my nurse I have something to look forward to, and that is her .......... |

At that time she was the Pastor and driving force of Deltona's Rowan Grove Community Church, she is also a Registered Nurse. She has been a staunch supporter of both Women's issues and Animal Rights. Amid her amazingly busy life she would hold religious studies classes both beginning and advanced… from her home in Deltona. She would officiate at our community's periodic and seasonal services. In keeping with manifesting her beliefs… she has rescued not only several cats but also four neglected mares whose training and upkeep she continues to fund out-of-pocket asking for no donations. Ms. Castle has opened her heart and home to a young veteran's family of three in crisis and also to a talented young man himself a victim of a broken home. Throughout all of this, she has remained an active and vital planner and participant in Central Florida's twice yearly regional community gatherings. She has appeared in interviews both in print and other media both as a spokesperson and as a facilitator of luminaries within our denomination's community. She is a remarkable powerhouse, role model and "force of Nature" for good in the community. |

Harding in Dr.Phillips.Her tireless efforts include countless daily treatment options for a diverse host of patients. I have always had a great deal of respect for her abilitity to console,comfort and diagnose people with undeniable professionalism and compassion . For over 3 decades she has dedicated herself to the nursing profession while also being a full time mother and wife. The immensity of her commitment to others became more apparent to me after the recent death of my mother. I was then faced with pneumonia , potentially life threatening allergies and an array of unexplained internal organ irregularities. Throughout the multitude of ensuing injections, medications, xrays,catscans and bloodwork she diligently coordinated my treatment to identify actual conditions and allay my fears. From mutiple appointments to a host of specialists she ensured that only viable and medically necessary solutions were pursued.I am eternally grateful to have had her in charge of my healthcare at a most difficult time in my life.Although the word hero is often used to describe a heroic action I would like the opportunity to acknowledge Marsh Bounds as a hero for her lifetime of dedication to others.. |

My mom would work in the hospital go to school manage 2 offices and come home for my brother and I. I was always sick and my brother needed medication as well therefore medical bills were adding up. No matter what happen she always made sure we were taken care of, she made sure her patients were taken care of, as well she made sure everyone she worked with was comfortable. With no support from anyone, she worked as a single parent and still went to school to futher her career. She became an RN in 2005 and life after got better but no matter what she did not let anything get her down and she stood strong through everything that she faced, because of her showing me what motivation can do I will never let anyone or anything get me down. |

The pain in my arm was so bad tears would fill my eyes. Every week I was cared for by a compassionate caring nurse. She was so conforting just to hae her beside me. From the time I made it to the room in her ward I was treated with kindness, efficiency and an infecious smile that made an otherwise painful time more tolerable. Rebecca and her assistant Donna took care of me, made sure I ate, took my meds and generally got me better enough to go home a day early. I could not have done it without them. Thank you to both . |

Deborah Zapiain Submitted by: Diana Labady on 05.16.10 10:07 AM I nominate a one-of-a-kind, especial and dedicated nurse. She leads by example. What makes her special? Why is she a hero? Here are just a few reasons why, in my humble opinion, she deserves the honors. First, she has nothing, because everything she has or gets is given to whoever needs it (I sometimes call it redistribution of assets). The moment she learns or sees that there is a need of ANYTHING – food, clothes, medicines, a telephone, attention, love, a hug, a listening ear, a plane ticket, an electric bill unpaid– she will get it resolved, regardless of who you are or much less, if it will be repaid. No strings attached! She loves, supports and helps her husband, who fulfilled a life dream to join the National Guard last year. She breathes and lives for her children – ensuring they get unconditional love and understanding and providing for them. She helps her mother and family in Puerto Rico every time is needed. Throughout the years, she has opened her home to many people in need of shelter, whether they are family or friends. She suffered the loss of her stillborn baby girl- Victoria Eugenia- back in 2003 and loss part of her former home during Hurricane Charlie that same month. She rebounded from her personal tragedy and obtained her nursing license the very next month. Personally, she supported our decision to adopt and helped with me throughout the adoption process from beginning to end. She has been at my side during my ups and downs. She is a home health nurse and loves it. As such, she has the opportunity (she calls it a blessing) to help people in their houses, and see what they need, in addition to health care. Her patients become their family. She has brought food or medicines for them when they can't get someone to run the errand. As a nurse, I know, because I have read notes from patients or their families, she provides exceptional service. She goes the extra mile. From everything I have witnessed during the past five years, one experience still stands out. One of her patients with terminal cancer was transferred to hospice care and hospitalized but the lady, whom Deborah had care for a couple of years and had developed a friendship and trusting relation, did not want to stay there. She was given a few weeks to live and she wanted to die at home. Since the lady had no family, she could not go back to her home. Debbie asked her if she would like to go to her home and she agreed. So hospice workers, social worker, and others I don't recall at this time, worked things out and the lady came to the Deborah's house, celebrated her 71st and last birthday, and died 10 days later. Who does something like this? I have only met one person: this caring, dedicated and special nurse. She has quite an impressive life resume!! This woman is an angel disguised as a nurse and I am blessed to also call her my sister!!!!! I am humbled to know her, be part of her life, and have her as my mentor and cheerleader as I study to become a nurse. |

She goes the extra mile with her patients and sometimes in her to do list you can see doing errands or bringing that favorite food to her patients from her own expenses. A terminally cancer patient that didnt want to finish her days home alone or at a hospice, my sister let her spend those last days at her home, in her bedroom which is the largest and where there was enough room for the hospital bed and all other needed equipment . she spent sleepless nights at the living room sleeping at the couch and checking on the hospice nurse in case there was a change or something was needed. Margarita is in heaven now but I am sure she is your guardian angel and with tears in my eyes because I witnessed it and I am so proud of you..I want to share with the world what a wonderful , extraordinary person and NURSE you are. But many fail to see that some heroes are just like us, living amoungst us just because they love what they do. This person is not only a hero to the eyes of many, but aswell as my mother. My mother is a registered nurse who works for Home Health Care. She spends a lot of time at work, often never getting enough sleep but the devotion that goes into her work is wonderfully shown. Each patient develops a bonding love and trust with my mom, which is difficult for some people. My mother works with the Elderly, her specialty is wounds but not just physically healing the wound but both healing the person's hope. My mom, just a year ago, was working with a patient who was very stubborn. She had a terminal cancer... but her story is a rather sad one. Her husband and all three of her children had perished of illness and she was striving alone. Now she was a very strong fighter, even with the weakness her body showed. She didn't like my mom at first, but before she knew it they had developed a strong relationship, she even called my mom her other daughter, because all her sons started with the letter "D" and so did my Mother. My mom helped her in every way that was humanly possible, sometimes even giving her more than what was possible. When she decided she didn't want to stay at a Hospice center my mom, without skipping a beat, opened the doors to our home. While there we even celebrated her birthday, she was already a part of the family for all of us. My mom was on the job when she took her last breath, my mom came as soon as she heard. But she knew she'd made a significant mark in that womens life, because she was happy all the time she was with my mother. The smiles that my mother gets whenever she opens that door to a patients house is irreplaceable which is why she loves it so much. Its truly an honor to live amoungst a person who cares truly for her patients as much as her family. I have to say its an honor just to be her Daughter. |

She was told he would not live but, maybe, a day or two because he has trisomy 13. She was strong and so was her love. As Colton grew and lived she became a CNA. After all, that was what was being sent to care for Colton. Her love and dedication to her son has made her the best nurse. She not only is a nurse, she is a nurse 24/7. She is also furthering her educartion in the medical field so she can better care for her son, and hopefully one day, have a career with others as well. |

My nurse Kathy who worked the night shift took care of me and my daughter so amazing during our stay. She was so gentle, so patient and she explained everything she was doing. She made me and my husband feel so comfortable and special. Everynight, at the start of her shift, she would bring my husband and I juice and crackers for the night, because the cafeteria was closed. We were so thankful just that she thought of us. She was the nurse who gave my daughter her first bath..I mean, of course I would never forget her. :) But she really is the sweetest and most amazing nurse I have had. I mean she works the nightshift for god sake. She went above and behond and deserves the hero award. Thanks Kathy! :) |

Beth Hedrick Submitted by: Megan Hedrick on 05.14.10 3:16 PM My moms story is best told by Dr. Linda Burke- Galloway's blog: "In celebration of Nurse’s Week, I’d like to share an inspiring story about a nurse with whom I work with, Beth Ann Hedrick, RN, BSN. To look at Beth today, you would never know that she is a breast cancer survivor who had a battle with death and won. My first encounter with Beth was via the telephone approximately 14 years ago, when I called the labor and delivery suite of our local hospital. In 2006, I was surprised to learn that Beth joined our health department as a supervisory nurse. After 18 years of working in the hospital, she had a calling to provide public service. However shortly after Beth started her new position, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. One of her most difficult challenges was breaking the news to her three children and husband, who had been recuperating from recent back surgery. Two days after Christmas in 2006, Beth underwent a double mastectomy with breast reconstruction. What was supposed to be a four-hour procedure took 12 hours instead. Beth awoke in the ICU on a ventilator and remained in the hospital for the next two weeks. Thirteen days after her procedure she encountered severe low back pain inhibiting her ability to walk. Three physicians diagnosed her with back strain as the result of her breast reconstruction. However, the pain persisted and she insisted on seeing her primary physician. During the car ride to his office, she screamed and writhed in pain. Upon her arrival, her primary care physician immediately called 911 and she was admitted to the hospital. A diagnostic MRI revealed possible metastasis to the bone and she was taken to the OR. The neurosurgeon found a pocket of pus as he had prepared to operate on her spine. The “bone metastasis” was actually a MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus) infection that would have killed her, had it ruptured. Beth spent the next 12 weeks in and out of the hospital and self-administered IV antibiotics twice a day during that time period. Her breast implants were removed and her chemo therapy was postponed for six months. Beth had economic setbacks as well. She lost her home and depleted her 401K retirement savings. However, despite insurmountable obstacles, her three children excelled in school and her husband remained by her side. Fast-forward to the present: Beth’s daughter, Megan, is graduating from Oprah Winfrey’s alma mater, Tennessee State University at the age of 20 on an athletic full-scholarship and there has been a documentary highlighting her accomplishments(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV8thlMSzW0). Her son, Matthew has also received a full-athletic scholarship to play football at West Virginia State and her youngest son is doing well in elementary school. Beth is cancer-free and is enrolled in a graduate program to become an advanced nurse practitioner." This blog by Dr. Linda Burke- Galloway sums up my mothers story perfectly. She is an amazing person and is my hero as well as many other peoples hero. She is not only an amazing person but is also an amazing nurse who takes passion and pride in every job she does as a nurse. She definitely deserves to be Orlando's Nurse hero so her story can be shared throughout. |

ALICE P. SIMCOE Submitted by: HUGH SIMCOE on 05.14.10 12:22 PM Alice Simcoe, RN, is a nurse who served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during World War II, in an active-duty capacity. Five years ago, Alice, who is my mom, saved my son's life by administering CPR, after finding him unresponsive, with no evident vital signs. Mom was 86 at the time, just two months shy of her 87th birthday. The ER physician was very clear in explaining how close my son had come to dying, or suffering brain-damage, due to oxygen deprivation. The end result of her efforts is that my son is now 23, is serving in the military, currently on his second deployment to the Middle-East. My mom just celebrated her 92nd birthday, is a two-time cancer survivor, and is an example of how nursing is a profession that prepares a person for a lifetime of providing care to those in need, regardless of the circumstances. (For the record, I have worked in healthcare since 1970, 20 years of which as a hospital administrator, and I can say unequivocally, that the quality of an institution's nursies defines the overall quality of that institution!) |

She is currently studying to become an Operating Room nurse after years in Advanced Life nursing. She is my s/hero becasue of her committment not only to Lucerne Hospital and the patients she treats, but also because of her dedication to her immediate and extended family. I beleive she was inspired to go into nursing after watching her own mother suffer with a serious burn on her leg for many years during a time when many poor Blacks in rural North Floridaa did not have health insurance and burn medicine was not as advanced as it is today. Presently, my own mother, her oldest living sister, iis living with myeloma(cancer of the blood plasma cells) and it is Mary who has again, become a secondary caregiver. Her ability to simplify complex medical issues and her calm, thoughtful, incisive and professional demeanor always gives our family hope. She is the ultimate "Nurse Feelggod" I feel honored to be able to honor my aunt both as a nurse and as a remarkable human being who has done what we all should do: leave the world a better place because we were lucky enough to be in it! Thank you Mary, for everything! |

She devorced and remarried,and has a daughter . Kinsey is sick little girl and her mother has to put her on dialysis every night because of some thing that she got when she was a baby. She left her job with the heart doctors and took a job for less pay so she could be off when Kinsey was off school.She now works for the Marion County School Board as a school nurse. How this girl keeps up with taking care of a sick child, keeping a home , Being a good wife to her husband,going to work every day , and taking her child to Gainesville Hospial once a month for test I don't know how she does it. God is on her side I'm sure |

Amanda Submitted by: Sabrina Bailey on 05.13.10 7:04 AM The nurse I want to tell you about is Amanda. I do not know her last name, but when I was admitted to Winnie Palmer on Feb. 2, 2010 to be induced, she was my nurse that night on the L&D floor. My Blood Pressure was extremely high ( at my most critical point is was something like 210/150-160) and they couldn't figure out why. Amanda had been a critical care nurse, so I was assigned to her but did not know that until later on. That night I believe that Amanda was my angel. She never left my side and at times had to continuously transfuse bp medicine through my IV just so my numbers could come down some. She made me feel safe. At one point another nurse came in and padded my bed, and that was enough to send my bp straight up. Amanda was my strength. She kept reminding me that I was in the place I needed to be in and the place where I could get the best care. She never made it scary though. My 8 year old daughter was there and it was such a relief that she never got frightened. Amanda didn't leave when her shift was over. She stayed with me until I was allowed to leave the L&D floor and got a room on the 9th floor. Even another nurse told her that she could go home, but like Amanda said in that moment her and I had formed a bond overnight, and she was going to make sure all was OK before leaving. I know it doesn't sound like much to some, but this lady kept me from having seizures that night and from having a stroke because of my BP. She was my guardian angel. I can never thank her enough for what she did. Had she not been there, my outcome might not have been as good.I am a young mom, only 28, and now I get to spend all the time in the world with my beautiful kids that God has blessed me with. Submitted by: Paulette Calienes LaBarbera on 05.12.10 11:36 PM Orlando Heroes, In Sept.2008 I went into Altamonte Springs Hospital for a Fibroid to be removed and a partial hysterectomy. When I came out of the surgery I met nurse Betty and her team. I felt like a newborn baby being waited on and taken care of. Anything I wanted and needed nurse Betty made sure I got it. I knew later how well nurse Betty and her team was when the next team came in and was not as attentive to my needs as they were. I requested nurse Betty and her team back and after a few complaints I got them all back especially her. I've always wanted to go back and give her flowers or something. But I cant think of anything that would be even close to what she gave me and how safe and secure she made me feel in an otherwise frightening time in my life. Myrtha Louis Submitted by: Lisa Bahrami on 05.12.10 3:19 PM My 87 year old father was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure a year ago and passed away last month. He had been in the hospital most of this year and had deteriorated to the point that little could be done for him. He spent the last two weeks of his life in hospice care in his home. Myrtha Louis with Samaritan Care Hospice of Orlando made several visits to check on my father and I was greatly impressed with her gentle and quiet demeanor and the fact that she genuinely cared not only about my father but about his family as well. When my father finally passed away, Myrtha was at my father's home within the hour. I will never forget how she respectfully washed my father's body, shaved him and dressed him in preparation for pick-up by the funeral home. She was so gentle and sweet it was if we were visited by an angel. Dealing with the death of a parent is extremely difficult and the few hours immediately after my father passed away were emotionally wrenching but Myrtha's comforting presence made it somehow more bearable. My brother and I had spent most of the two weeks my father spent in hospice helping to take care of him as best we could. Myrtha took the time to cosole us and let us know that my father would have been proud of us for being there for him when he needed us most. It's been almost a month since my father's death and I can still see this kind and gentle lady's face and hear her quiet but reassuring voice. It was a blessing to have known her, if only for a very short time. It takes a special kind of person to work with hospice patients and this is certainly one special nurse |

She has been at the job she works at for the past 10 yrs & she says or thinks, if she doesn't take care of her patients or stand up for them, nobody else will! Whenever I go visit her, she is extremely busy, being pulled in several different directions! ALWAYS willing to help & can NEVER say NO! She covers for people when they can't make it in or need an extra nurse. She stays double shifts & gets off late when others leave early or when it's time to clock out! She will then go home, grab a bite to eat, go to bed & get up & do it again! Constantly going in on her days off or doing work when she happens to go in just for mandatory meetings! She even gathers all work together before starting the day & clocking in, also takes work home! She is TOTALLY DEDICATED! I am not only glad she's my mom but an incredible & amazing nurse & woman! I LOVE HER & would want her to take care of me if I was ever in real need! I love you mom & THANK YOU! You are appreciated! |

Wheither it is to bath a patient or change a diaper or start i.v's on a patient. For me, being the aide, being able to work side by side with your nurse is a very important part of my job to be able to give the care the patient needs. There has been not 1 patient that dislikes or has a bad work to say about her. She is very compassionate to everyones feelings (co-workers and patients). On Oct 13th 2006 our son kyle was born at Winnie Palmer Hospital.We found out hours later that he was born with transposition of the great arteries along with other Heart problems. They rushed him down to ICU at Winnie Palmer where the Doctors give him a slim chance of making it.I was devastated beyond belief. How am I going to tell my other 2 boys, there brother was not coming home & if he did, I have no idea for how long.That just took my heart and broke it in tiny pieces.Well in the ICU unit, they gave us a nurse named Beth-Of course when you first see him being prepared for open heart surgery, you are in another world with no expressions at all...just shock. Well Nurse Beth, felt my heart and came over an introduced herself as Kyle's nurse as he/we go thru this. At first you just stare and say hi and just sit there are watch your son perhaps dying right in front of you. Beth which is a Mom herself came over to me and started to talk with me and I spoke just a couple of words and my mind went to another place. I yelled at Beth and did not treat her with any respect and till this day, I don't remember all I said, but it was not nice...I know that for sure..My body was shaking with anger and sadness....!Beth did not back off my son or myself. She asked to to calm down which I do remember with the softess words..That did not work...She grabbed me and hugged me and did not let go even though I wanted to run away from this nightmare. Beth promised me he would be fine and she won't leave Kyle's side or mine for a minute...SHE DID NOT EVEN FOR A SECOND. Nurse Beth put my boy and me first, ahead of her own family. From the 13th to the 17th when he went to surgery...ALL I SEEN WAS BETH...I till today am blown away thinking-why would she stay here with us and never leave our side?. I asked her that recently at an appt we had at Arnold Palmer & Beth said" It's what I enjoy doing for others & I love my job and my new friends". Kyle just went back for his Echo and guess who we had as a nurse.....BETH...It was awesome seeing her( since again I was in a panic for Kyle's test and then the results) and she was so excited to see Kyle doing so well and we gave each other a huge hug and I told her again I was sorry about things that happened three years ago and again she said in kind words..."We are family, Don't ever worry about that stuff-So tell me about you guys". How do you repay a person who stands by you-NO MATTER WHAT..!.Who loves you unconditionally..!Put my family first then her own and when you go for a test she's Kyles nurse AGAIN...That is just PRICELESS and a blessing, since she knows she can handle me....lolol...Beth knows what an emotional mess I am when it comes to my boys....So again it was meant to be we had BETH....Beth is OUR HERO and there is nothing in the world that could change that for us...WE LOVE HER & her dedication to her work and most of all her people she comes in contact with. BETH YOU ROCK.....!!!! My love and hugs to you always & tell your family THANK YOU for letting us borrow you while we fell apart.THANK YOU-Could not have gone thru this without you....!!!!! |

On April 7th 2010 my husband had to be rushed to the hospital. My husband had to have Emergecy Surgey the folowing morning April 8th 2010, and was placed inoom 353 after surgey. My husband ended up being in the hospital for 31 days and had to have a total of 2 surgeys. He just left the hospital on May 8th 2010. We had a problem with a few nurses and we were considering transfering to a different hospital. Then we got Jazmine. She was a young very,knowledgeable sweet nurse.She had great bedside manners was very helpfull,and treated my husband with the best of care. I wish she would have been able to work both day and night shifts. I hated when the end of the day came at 7pm and we knew her shift was over. I was at my husbands side for almost 2 weeks and the other 2 weeks I had to go back to work. I tried to work on the days I knew Jazmine was going to be his nurse due to the fact I had no worries as long as she was by his side or at a call of a button.I knew he would be taken care of. When Jazmine was his nurse it was like I could work and not worry and my husband could lay in the bed and know he was going to be ok. Jazmine has only been a nurse for a few years and she sets the example for Nurses in our eyes. I must say it is a blessing that new nurses as young as Jazmine treat and care for the injured or sick just as good if not better than the vetern nurses do. If I were blind and could not see I would have thought that she would have been a nurse for years and years. I wish people would look at her and see that she is the defention of what a nurse is. Thank you Jazmine. I will never forget you or what you have done for my husband. |

Tressa Echols Submitted by: Jean Horst on 05.11.10 3:10 PM I had never met anyone quite like Tressa Echols. Tressa is a nurse at Savannah Court in Oviedo, Florida an Alzheimer's facility. Tressa’s ability, thoughtfulness and kindness made my mother comfortable, while at Savannah Court and even after the facility could no longer manage her. Tressa helped her (me) as my mother was transferred and placed in another facility then had to be moved again as the facility thought they could handle her, but discovered that was not the case. Tressa coordinated her moves; ensuring clothing and furniture transferred with my mother. I honestly don’t believe I could have done it without Tressa…Tressa was a God send. Tressa and I finally found a facility at Pine Acres in Apoka Florida, that was as caring as Tressa was… my mother passed away in April of this year, but I know she was cared for and loved both by Tressa and Pine acres. My mother was a hand full, she would hit, bite and kick and Tressa took every hit, bite and kick that my mother did and gave back love and affection. Tressa went above and beyond what anyone would expect. Tressa is a special person and I hope she gets the recognition she so much deserves. |

She began working at Seminole County Jail about 15 years ago. Since then, she has never forgot about home! She is also a nurse at the Heritage in Sanford Florida. Dealing with 2 jobs and 3 kids and also going thru a HUGE divorce... she never forgot about her career! She works so many hours a week just to provide for my siblings. I am a senior in college at the University of Arkansas, my sister Ryanne is a senior in college at the university of Central Florida, my brother is an ex marine. We have been thru so m any trials as a family and my mother has always been the backbone to our family. But my problem is the fact that she has never been acknowledge for none of her work. No matter how much we tell her, I really dont think she knows. Working at the jail, I hear a lot of inmates get out and tell us that my mom was the only one to look out for them and let them know that everything will be okay! After all of her hard work that she displays day in and day out... she needs the reward, the "thank you" and the love!!! Any nurse out there that has done what my mother has done, deserves the upmost respect... but for Jackie McCray a hard working, 2 job, and full time mother... She deserves this award more than anyone else!!!! PLEASE!! |

It all started 6 years ago when my family was blessed with Ronise. I gave birth to a special needs daughter, they told me in order to bring her home from the hospital I had to have in home nursing. I was a mess my daughter was already cared for by nurses for 3 months, I did not feel comfortable with having some stranger in my home. We had several nurses come and go, but the minute we met Ronise she was not only Eliana's nurse but part of the family. She is a very hard worker and a mother of 4 with her own child with a medical condition. Ronise is a nurse that cares 100% about her patients, she is not in it for the money, but for the love and caring for people. She manages to work fulltime, be a fulltime mother and continue her education as well. Ronise has touched my whole family, her love and nursing care for my daughter has made such an impact on who my little girl is today. She was not just Eliana's nurse but a romodel too. The world needs more dedicated nurses like Ronise Carter amazing nurse, mother, sister and friend. She will always be my families HERO. |

During this time I had to make scheduled appointments and not once was I not informed as to the steps required for the study. I have watched her jump over a church pew to start CPR on a heart attack victim, assist commercial airline flight crews with seriously medically compromised passengers, stop at serious accident scenes to render assistance until EMS arrived, help injured/sick people at our local amusement facilities until EMS arrived, and recently at the Mecum Auction helped an injured man who was in cardiac distress after being struck during fight.Gail is committed 100% to her calling as a nurse. Her nursing skills are exceptional whether she's in the ER or out in our community. I am blessed to have her on my team. Nurse Gina goes above and beyond her regular duties. My son is what I call a "frequent flyer" in Nurse Gina's office. I trust her with my child as do all the parents at the Elementary School. Every student that enters the clinic receives personalized TLC. Nurse Gina definitely doesn't get paid enough to do what she does day in and day out for the students. Only a special person can do what Nurse Gina does every day for the students. |

However, my surpevixor, John, has been he most caring infividueal I've ever know. Due to my illness, I'm on dsabiliey. However, he calls be at leat weekly to see how I'm doing. He's a wonderful man. She is one of the most hard-working, dedicated people I know. She has been a nurse for over 25 years and currently works ICU at Altamonte. I don’t believe I would have been so driven to be a nurse if it weren’t for the immense caring and compassion she led me to see in the profession. I am now about to graduate nursing school and believe I could not have done it without her continuing guidance, encouragement, and support. She has always been there for me, her patients, and anyone else that has needed her. I could not be more proud of her, her accomplishments, or her work ethic. One day I aspire to be the kind, caring, and selfless nurse she is. I believe she sets a wonderful example of what nursing should be; and for that, the other reasons listed above, and many others, she is my hero. I would also like to thank all the nurses out there who continuously put their own needs behind those of others and even their own lives in danger to save countless other lives. I believe one week is not enough to celebrate the kind of work these wonderful people do, but since it is all they’re given, it’s nice to have a place to let them know the gratitude many feel towards them for all their hard work. I think she knows how I feel and that makes it easier to talk to her. Please do something for her. I wish I could send her on a vacation and so she could just get away for awhile and enjoy herself; I don't think that she is into male strippers "ha Ha" I hope only the best for her; because without her ; there would be so many sick and unhappy. She is a hero because she is always helping people in any way she can. After we moved to Florida, she helped take care of my Dad until his death and has always been there for me through my many allergies that usually bring on the onset of Anaphylaxis. Somehow with all that goes on in life, she has managed to become the "mother" to a foreign exchange student that we hosted for her senior year in high school. Our "daughter" will graduate in June and is coming back for her college years. |

She stayed with me, keeping me still even though I was trying to stand with a shattered leg. She did not leave her name with the Police and even after 4 years I cannot find out who she was. I owe her my eternal graditide for preventing me from losing my leg. I know I do not know her name or where she works but I do know God was smiling at her on that day. |

Having a 3 year old and a 4 week old baby at home, it was really hard to take care of them and not be able to walk so well. The pain was just horrendous. Not only did my mother take care of me, take me to my doctor's appointments, apply the silvadine lotion and wrap my legs, and change my dressings, but she also helped me take care of my babies while my fiance was at work. She's always been an amazing nurse, always throwing all her dedication into her work and her patients. She's also been an amazing mom, and my best friend. Even though she has a bad back and knees and is in a lot of pain, she would still work over time hours to see her patients when she was a visiting nurse. She loves what she does, and it shows in her dedication and the way she cares for people. So thank you mom, for all you do for me, and all you have done for others. |

She donates a minimum of eight hours a week as volunteer time (no charge) to helping patients who are less fortunate and do not have funds to pay for a nurse yet desperately need help. All of her patients those who pay and those who can not pay praise her. She recently had foot surgery and needed some time off from her patients to recover as she could not walk. She checks on them via phone and they call her also. Every one she takes care has said they never want another nurse because she is the most loving, caring, efficient and kind individual they have ever known in a nurse and as a human being. She treats them as her own family. She is a True Hero and deserves to be honored in great detail. |

On my stays I have a nurse named Abe that Has become some what of a God send. He is very caring and very understanding. He is on top of his Daily task and make my stay very comfortable. I am a 58 year old, military retired (U.S. Army, 21 years of service) who had a Mitral valve replacement done on 10/05/09. When I woke up from my surgery, the first person I saw was Mengkha. She made sure I was comfortable and asking me on several occasions if I needed any pain medication. I found this unusual, because three years earlier I had an Aortic valve replacement, and I was constantly asking for pain medication. Luckly this time I had a nurse that really understood that the surgery I had was not a laughing matter. Mengkha trully went the extra mile to make my brief stay in CVICU a pleasant one. Unlike other nurses, she took the time to explain to me that I was out for a long period time. She told me that my family came to visit me, but all I wanted to do was to sleep. It was very nice of her to talk to me and to reasure me that everything was fine. If I have to go for another surgery, I hope Mengkha is my nurse. |

Cidi Hayes and Maria Smith Submitted by: Javier Aponte on 05.06.10 4:49 PM Heart Care Center at the Heart Failure Clinic. I am a 46 year old bilingual male teacher who had open heart surgery in 08. I am also a person living with diabetes. After 2 years I have had a terrible time with both health issues. The last visit to Orlando Hospital Florida East, the doctors said they could not do anything for me, in other words go home and die. I found through the grace of God the heart center. Upon my arrival and meeting the staff I felt like I found hope. Everyone was so welcoming that I cried thanking them. The words of comfort giving me "HOPE" was the most important thing for me. Cindi Hayes sat and grabbed my hand and prayed with me I was overwhelmed by this, I thanked them so much. Maria Smith was so kind to me in giving me support of my treatment. I wake up now and say and additional prayer for them, because it is like looking at the yellowest sunflower and saying there are people that care and there is hope. Even if I die tomorrow because of my health condition, at least someone tried. God bless them and I thank them for their support. Mt Sinai MBC Healthcare Ministry Submitted by: Ernestine Cofer on 05.06.10 2:35 PM The Mt Sinai MBC( located at 5200 West South Street, Orlando), healthcare ministry as a whole and Nurse Chianta Lindsey in particulare, are my heros. This healthcare team educates our entire church congregation on the importance of living a healthy life. They provide us the tools and information to achieve this. Some examples of the classes and workshops given at the chruch are; a Total Wellness Initiative Program , an Asthma and Tobacco workshop, Learning how to self-manage chronic disease, STD Awareness (HIV/AID's awareness for Sista's), healthy living and exercise , CPR traing and warning signs for heart attacks. They initiated a Health information form for each church member to complete ,enableing them to serve as liaisons between us and EMS in emergency siturations. After a class , given by Nurse Lindsey, explaining the importance of , the need for , and the types of colonosthapy exams ,I overcame my fears and had the surgery. There were polops found and removed that could have turned cancerous. Chianta Lindsey and the nurses of the Mt. Sinai MBC healthcare ministry have founded The Patricia L. Black Community Health Center. Enlisting the services of volunteer Doctors, the Center provides health care for low income famlies in the community free of charge! With God's blessings (and our Pastor's) these selfless men and women deserve to be praised! They themselves have some stories to tell! Thank you for the opportunity to share them with you. |

My wife Carol and I will be married 48 years in June and grew up together, same block, same schools, forever right. Several years ago, while we were running a horse farm here in Ocala, she suffered a stroke, which later thru tests at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, confirmed a non-operatable brain tumor, which was treated at length at Mayo with Radiation, and then led to confirmation that she needed surgeries for insertion of a G-Tube for Medication, hydration and Nutrition. I am and have been for the last several years her 24/7 care giver. So enough about me...Now enters our angel Cindy who is her primary nurse thru THE HOSPICE OF MARION COUNTY, West TEAM, here in Ocala. Cindy comes at least once per week, and has been for the last two years, to check Carol's vitals and give support and advice, as directed by Hospice Doctors and her own experience. At this juncture this probably seems much like any nurse, BUT not SO!!! CINDY is the most compasionate, caring, loving and devoted Nurse we have ever seen. She knows that I will fight to my last breath to care for my girl, and she has been my SECOND all the way. She sees an awful lot of tough situations, but never is de-terred from her focus with my dear wife. I know we are a little ways from Orlando, but you should honor this wonderful Woman, who has Devoted her life to caring for the very, very sick. It was suggested that I have a heart cath. test in the future. The hospital realized I did not have health insurance and they advised me to just go home and come back later as an out patient if I decided to have the test.At that point it was my decision to go home, no insurance and the mounting hospital bill.. Nurse Jenkins was on duty when all of this was going on. She later came back in my room, closed the door and strongly advised me to get the heart cath. She said there is something wrong, find it. The next morning the procedure was done and they found a 90% blockage, fixed it with a Stint and I went home the next day..She saved my life.. Sally Matson has been a nurse for over 25 years. She is currently a Wound Specialist at Arnold Palmer Hospital. I have never seen a woman so devoted to her work. She definitely goes above and beyond the call of duty. Not only does my mom have an amazing ability and knowledge about her specality, but she truly cares about each patient and family she comes in contact with. A few examples to show her love for her patients: One night my mom came home late with a book in her hand. She was at a book store for over an hour looking for the perfect book for one of her teen patients. She wanted to give this girl a present and an escape while she was healing. My mom cared for this girl as a patient and a person. I remember another time my mom came home with socks and clothes for a baby that she was caring for since the family could not easily afford these things. Although these examples have a monitary value, there is love behind them. She not only puts her whole heart to heal their wounds, but cares about their well-being. I look up to her work ethic and strength she has to continue to work in people's lives. She is truly a blessing to me and I know she has touched others as well! She even receives Christmas and Thank you cards from patients years ago. Thank you, Mom, for being the wonderful, caring nurse you are! |

She has a tremendous amount of compassion for patients in the end stages of life, as well as for their families. Her dream had been to become a missionary nurse, but health issues kept her from completing her studies for twenty years. She persevered, and finally became a nurse in 2004. Last year, she was able to realize her dream by accompanying a team from our church to Haiti, where she was able to provide basic health care to more than 400 grateful people who wouldn't have had access otherwise. She is looking forward to her next trip in July. She practices her faith in a real way by touching others with the the love of God, and is an inspiration to me every day. |

Mounds of paperwork, arrangements for special medication, scheduling treatments and giving explanations that put me at ease are just a few of the caring tasks they have done on my behalf. Having been a patient of Dr. Raul Castillo for almost 8 years I know quality care when I see it. Heather Ashley and JoMarie Hedrick are just two of the many Orlando Heroes at the FL Hospital Cancer Institute. She use to work at ORMC but because of her parent's illness she has had to relocate to Brevard County. She is now employed by Wuesthoff Hospital in Melbourne. Not only does she save lives in the PCU and ICU she takes care of her father who has terminal cancer. That's not all when her sister was 18 she was hit by a drunk driver and suffered a brain stem injury. She was in a coma for a year and a half and miraculously woke up. She now lives in an assisted living facility and Tandy also takes care of her! Tandy is an extrordinary nurse and caring person. I hope that she had to relocate to Brevard County will not exlude her from nominating her as a Nurse Hero! |

I came in through the backdoor--the emergency room. During that difficult and yes combative stay, I had the good fortune to have two nurses who gave critical assistance and care at very important times. Nurse Donahue designed a treatment regimen that would help diagnose my problem. Nurse Payne kept me informed and made certain the the dialogue between me and the attending physicians was not broken. Sound routine? I wish it had been. These professionals kept both their cool and their standards. I hope Florida Waterman appreciates them. I know I still do. |

After working two years in Saudi Arabia she came to the U.S. as a contract nurse where we met in New York. While on active duty assigned to various commands her along with our two children stayed behind in Washington D.C. where she continued to work full-time at one hospital and moonlighting part-time at another in my absence. I believe that she has done an outstanding job raising our two children providing them with a private education where they are now both college graduates. Together with much encouragement she has transformed them into young citizens where they can effectively enter the job market. Being a nurse for over 30 years she refuses to accept management positions and that she prefers maintaining a one-on-one patient contact. She's truely a nightengale at the bedside. Working at Health Central's endoscopy unit she consistently executes her nursing modalities of her profession with an upbeat attitude. Coming from a hospital in Washington DC she has been awarded "perfect attendance" award for several years. This shows a true dedication to her profession. I'm sure that together with our children she will always in our eyes be the real hero that she continues to be to this day. |

I recently returned from Afghanistan where I aggravated an injury I had. I ended up getting hip replacement surgery. I am the Inspector General for the 143d Expeditionary Sustainment Command. My wife has nursed me back to health and has given me the positive re-enforcement I needed regardless of my gloom and doom descriptions for my future I would give her. She stood strong and has never waivered to get me back to optimal health. I have watched her grow as a nurse for over 16 years working for the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota, A Hospice in Hilo Hawaii and as a Nurse Educator for a local Florida Nursing and Rehabilitation Company in Hunters Creek. She is loved by the residents and is the most caring person I have ever met. She gets personal invitations to participate in birthdays of residents where she works from the families and is a very down to earth person who has never in my 16 years ever gotten any recognition of any kind for her service to nursing. She made it possible for him to come home from the V.A. to pass away in his own bed with all of his loved ones close by his side. She stayed with him until the end and made him as comfortable as she possibly could. My grandfather wanted her to do great things with her life, she voulnters for the Shriners and is a Melody for the Bahia Drum & Bugle. She helps at events to raise money for children who can not afford care in the majority of her free time. I have seen my Aunt stop at accidents to help when no one else would even stop. My husband was in an accident and she was the first one to get to him, keeping him alive and saving his leg that was almost severed completely. You see my Aunt is absolutly the most amazing woman! All of this on top of 2 jobs as an R.N. and sometimes she even makes time for home health care services. My Aunt is and always will be my hero and I think she deserves a Nurse Hero award. When my mother was being treated in a local hospital and was about to have some very serious test done, that would have probably killed her if these procedures were done, Daryl recognized the problem and said it was (CHF) Congestive Heart Failure and had her removed to another hospital and sure enough that is what it was. He recognized what was wrong, tried to tell the doctors at the first hospital, but they would not listen so he had her removed to the hospital where he was working and definitely saved her life. Daryl works in the Operating Room and is tops in his field. Patient care comes first and he does not mind going up against doctors or anyone not giving good patient care. He has had doctors in different hospitals who request he be the nurse in charge in the OR, when their wifes or husbands are being operated on. They know the kind of care he gives and everything is done by the books and how he was trained. He is tops in his field and it shows in his work daily. |

Markham is an R.N. and the Health Risk Manager at the Orange County Corrections Center, at 33rd St., Orlando, FL. (Just for clarification purposes, Lourdes' first name is PRONOUNCED: "LORDS" and NOT," Lor-dez".) Not only have her coworkers informed me of the outstanding job she does; particularly in problem-solving, not only between relatives +/or friends of various inmates that are incarcerated there, but as well as, between some of the medical staff that have medical concerns, pertaining to a sick or injured inmate in the Medical Dispensary Unit. Lourdes is a very caring person. Her dedication doesn't stop at where she is employed. A few years ago, her younger brother needed a hip replacement. Lourdes had extended her after hours in assisting to her brother's recovery -- from changing his dressings, examining his surgical wound healing process and assisting with her brother's rebound to his normal ambulatory mobility. And recently, as within the last couple of months, Lourdes had also spent some "quality time" in assisting her older brother, who had been recovering from both foot and ankle surgery to his right foot area, after suffering from a serious fall. Though both of her brothers are married, Lourdes' younger brother's wife work's f/t and had to take care of their first child, who was very young toddler at the time. (She is now six and a half years old. They also have a four year old son.) Lourdes' older brother's wife is a f/t, Special Education Teacher. She also has MS. So by the time she gets off work, she needs some absolute rest! And is limited to what she was able to do for her husband. It is to the best of my knowledge, neither of Lourdes' brothers asked for Lourdes to help them in any way. But it was Lourdes, herself, who had stepped forward, offering her personal & professional care to her two brothers on these two separate occasions. Lourdes' younger brother and his family now reside in Atlanta, GA. And there have been incidents, where Lourdes has volunteered her "services" with the invitation of both her brother and sister-in-law, when either or both of their young children had taken ill...Aunt "Louie", as she is affectionately called by her niece & nephew! Lourdes also takes it upon herself to, occasionally, "peak-in" and inquire as to how her elderly neighbors, a retired NAVY dentist and his wife, are doing? (The good doctor's wife is a diabetic; and both being in their 80s, are frail.) They do have a medical assistant, working with each of them. But they both feel very comfortable that someone like Lourdes, has taken an interest in their well-being! They always welcome her with open arms, like a daughter! I hope this nomination is consider "bias" on my part. Because Lourdes happens to be my "Significant Other" in life. We've been together just a bit more than two years and love one another! Brianna Ramos Submitted by: Geri Messerschmitt on 05.04.10 12:42 PM On Dec.24th 2009 my son Isaiah was born. He was exactly 1 pound. Brianna helped me keep my sanity. She taught me so much about preemies and how to care for them. Things that are normally everyday routine things are scary when your child is one pound. Brianna walked me through diaper changing, touching, holding and feeding. She made it clear that all nurses and doctors have a different way of doing things but that does not mean one is wrong and one is right, just different way of care. I used to tease her and tell her shes always so politically correct. If it weren't for Brianna I would have been afraid to care for my own baby. She actually scheduled taking a new job around Isaiah's tentative date to leave the Winnie Palmer Nicu. Then my son became ill and Brianna was so caring and dedicated to my sons well being she went above and beyond to find out what was wrong and to get him back on his path to come home. She still comes to check on him and because of her I know my baby and his needs better than anyone. It has been a very long four months and I feel truly blessed to have had such a professional,caring excellent nurse like Brianna Ramos to go thru, what she called a long rollercoaster ride. I don't think I could have done it without her. Thanks to an amazing nurse. |

One Easter Sunday on a drive from Orlando to Ocala there was a car turned upside down in the middle median of the turnpike, Todd pulled over without a 2nd thought and sprung in to action assessing the injured, calling the paramedics and calming those involved in the accident. Todd is definatly a HERO! He is always on the job, even when he is off. |

When I was having chemo treatments every week for 4-5 hours, Julie was the one who hooked me up to the bags of "stuff" they put in me. When you enter the office of DR. R. Tummala, you can hear Julie laughing. She always has a smile on her face and always comes to say hi, when I go in for check ups. She is the only person that could put a needle in my arm and I did not feel anything.I, like many other people,Ihate needles. DR. Tummala's office is in Leesburg. Julie has worked for him for a long time. Julie is my Nurse Hero. |

I first met her when she treated me in an Emergency room in Kissimmee as a victim of aggravated battery in 1983. She has worked with Osceola Mental Health in the Day Treatment facility during the 80's and early 90's. She has worked in the Katrina relief efforts, also the Women's Breast Center at Osceola Health Dept. An awesome nurse and wonderful human being. She and her husband Dr. Leonard Skizynski literally changed the face of our county's mental health treatment for the better. She changed my life. She deserves recognition for all she has helped to grow and learn to acheive self-esteem and for the betterment of our local health services. The toll on your lives is beyond what most of us could tolerate. You are separated from your families, you endure physical, mental and emotional injuries.
