Memorial Day is our designated time to recognize the contributions to our nation by the armed forces. I remember as a child the thrill of the parade and the uniformed personnel marching smartly down Main St, Rochester NY. We stood and cheered for all of you then. Please know that you are in our prayers daily asking Go for His attention to your safety and the accomplishment of your goal...Our Nation's Way of Life. My personal thanks to each of you. Our daily prayers are elevated to the almighty God, with his promise for peace in our lives, for the gift of love in our hearts, and for the hope of eternal life in heaven when we will meet face to face with Him and all his angels and saints. Sharon Oliver
As a dialysis patient, I have to deal with many medical personnel and my concerns for my treatment can sometimes be stressful to say the least. Multiply my concerns by each dialysis patient at the Ocala Regional Kidney Center East, and the Facility Administrator, Ms. Sharon Oliver, has much more to deal with than scheduling of staff, supplies, or medical emergencies. Nevertheless, with each patients concerns, she approaches them with respect and dignity. Never does a patient feel they are not receiving the ultimate of care and Ms. Oliver treats each patient without bias or prejudice.
Ms. Oliver is a Nurse who wears many hats. With each task she approaches, it is with skill and expertise.
Being on dialysis can be frightening. A patient's life is literally, in the hands of staff, who are always under the watchful eye of Ms. Oliver. Knowing Ms. Oliver has hands on medical supervision over each patient, allows me to have a stress free treatment. I may be ill but I was blessed to be sent to a dialysis center where the medical care is regarded with the utmost esteem and that is all due to the personal attention of Ms. Sharon Oliver. It is with the deepest respect and admiration that I nominate Sharon Oliver for the May 2011 Nursing Hero Award.

Lily Garcia-Carreras
Lily works in the ORMC, Kuhl Avenue, location. I met her just a week ago when I was admitted to the unit she works on. I am a cancer patient and had a bad reaction to previously given chemotherapy. I wound up in the ER and then ICC (burn unit as they had room available). She was extremely friendly as she cared for me and gave me more information about my health condition and and guarded me with her thorough knowledge of nursing. We even had a chance to chat "girl talk" for a short time. Once I moved to a regular room she even stopped in to check on me. Lily is a wonderful asset to ORMC and to the City of Orlando.

Sarah Brown NP
Sarah is a wound care nurse for WTN . She does home health care for patients unable to travel due to there wounds. My Mother is 92 years old and has led a active life working up to the time she started getting sores on her foot. We went to Dr after Dr and all they did was give her pain medication and antibiotics, nothing was working and her pain was severe. we asked for a wound Dr and they sent Sarah to the home, she was a true hero. My mother became her priority and she made appts for pain management, special shoes so that she can get out. She truely cares about her patients calling to check on them and give updates on the treatment. She cares for the patient as a whole considering there state of mind as well as the injury. My mother was depressed over the wounds and she assured her it was going to get better and to stay positive. Most people would consider the age and not take that much interest as we had seen in several practices. My mothers foot is getting better everyday and i know with out the great care and concern that sarah has given my nother would be in bad shape. she suffered for 5 months before sarah took over her care, her quility of life is already improving and we owe it all to our nurse hero Sarah Brown. Sarah became a nurse to help people and we are thankful that she came into my mothers life.My Mother is now looking forward to getting back out and working again thanks to Sarah and her encouragement and treatment. Sarah is a true Nurse hero.

More importantly he exemplifies the human qualities of a nurse. He is caring and compassionate. He works long shifts and even when he is home he never stops thinking of those he takes care of. Melissa Hopkins
My husband David is on the transplant list at Florida Hospital. Melissa Hopkins was his transplant coordinator up until a month ago. Navigating through the transplant process, analysing bills (there are many), making sure every appointment is kept and making sure all lab and testing is done on time while holding down a full time job is a lot to keep straight. Melissa took so much of this burden off of me. She was on top of everything. I thought I was anal. Not compared to her. Every one of my phone calls were returned promptly, every MRI/CT Scan/Blood work, doc appointment was taken care of by her. I know my husband was not her only patient, yet when I would call, she knew his case inside out. There was no way she was reading his case off a computer screen. Her dedication and caring nature has made this process a little more easier. His new transplant coordinator has some awfully big shoes to fill but I have faith she will be just as awesome as Melissa. All of the nurses in the Liver Transplant unit at Florida Hospital are beyond awesome. So are the technicians, clerical staff, doctors, etc. I have never met such a caring group of people and I am truly grateful for every one of them

I know you are looking for one name to nominate. However, I want to take this opportunity to thank every nurse & every CNA that I've ever worked with in my nursing career. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be the nurse that I am today. Thank you to each and every one of you for your patience, teamwork, for having my back, for every admission you've helped wme with, for every hug you've given me when I've been close to tears. Thank you for running and getting me something to eat because I didn't have time to do it myself. Thank you for MAKING me stop and eat. Too many names to mention. But they all know who they are.

Janet Henderson
Janet is a nurse coordinator for Children's Medical Services in Viera, Florida.
Recently one of my daughters was having trouble with Epilepsy. She was experiencing tests, hospitalizations and constant tremors and vocal tics . It was very worrisome as my wife and I had already lost a daughter to Epilepsy in February of 2007.
Janet was my go to person for information and getting things done. After 2 days in the hospital the report from her tests were slow in coming. Janet phoned them and prodded the doctor to complete the report so we could come up with a treatment plan for Jessica.
She was extremely patient with me as I called daily to check on results and did so even when I became not so patient.
Because of Janet's persistence, Jessica was placed on a treatment plan that now after 2 weeks, appears to be controlling the symptoms she had been experiencing for years!
Janet Henderson is my hero and I would heartily support her nomination for your award!!

Trenesha
Ms. Trenesha is my son (Daron Brown) Sickle Cell nurse. As man know Sickle Cell disease is a lot to deal with and has it's ups and downs. Ever since my son has been diagnosed this nurse has gone above and beyond to ensure that any questions or concerns we have get answered. When Daron comes to his appointments she stays entertaining him and continues to establishes a relationship with him. Daron is now 15 months. When he turned 1 and had his first birthday party she attended. It is not too often that you see a nurse go above and beyond to connect with their patients. We are very grateful for her because through this journey we are going to need someone just like her. The relationship she has with Daron helps the doctors and other staff come in and give him the best treatment possible. We want our son to live a long healthy life and we are very grateful that we have her there to help.

Terri Orlando
I first submitted the posting below on Monday (May 9). I've checked each day and noticed that other reviews are being added and yet not mine. Please advise. Thank you. -Doyle Adams
When one first learns that they have a "morbid, chronic disease" often many questions and fears fill one's mind. In 2004 I was diagnosis with Acromegaly (Giantism) and told that I would need to see an Endocrinologist for the rest of my (abbreviated) life. I can not recall exactly how I connected with Dr. Ramon Urdaneta's group, the Florida Hospital Diabetes and Endocrine Center, but I have been so thankful all these many years because it brought nurse Terri Orlando (yes, that really is her last name!) into my life. I have been to dozens of specialists over the past seven years, enduring many tests, procedures, and even a few surgeries along the way. I've met hundreds of "health professionals" but so very few, if any, have set the standard so high as has Terri. She is a delight to see during each visit. Smiley, upbeat, encouraging, supportive, trustworthy, genuine, energetic....a friend; Terri makes "going to the doctor" something my wife and I actually enjoy - indeed, look forward to doing every few months. If one day she were to "move on" to other things her position would no doubt be filled - but she would never be replaced. She's my hero.

Lennard Carter Jr.
My Nurse hero was a hero long before he was a nurse his heroic feat made him become a nurse. On Feb. 16, 2008 my husband daughter and I were in a terrible car accident on the Turnpike our car rolled over 3 times(we shut down the turnpike for hours and made the news) and i was pinned in between the windsheild and the ground my husband freed himself and with by standers he lifted the car off of my leg, when the EMT's showed up they began to work on freeing me and my daughter and did not realize until over halfway through my extraction that my husband was the driver and he also needed medical attention, this was just the begining of his selflessness. I needed 24 hour care Lennard jumped in cared for me and returned to work running our beauty salon by day and caring for me at night,he was so compassionate, I saw this in the way he cared for me it was something exta not because he was my husband, but it was in him,you could feel the true compassion he cared for his mother before she died of ovarian cancer when he was 18 and then his younger siblings(he is the oldest of 6) I just knew it was in him, he went to nursing school and was praised by his instructors, won an achiement award and has been a nurse for almost a year (June3) and he choose to work in a mental hospital, he wants to help heal the mind and body, this man is not only my husband he is a hero to alot of people.

Alice was my aunt's nurse while she was in hospice for the final three months of her life. She went above and beyond to make sure that she was well taken care of. I remember one day in particular when she came to check on her and brought along a clown nose, balloon hats, and gift bags for my aunt, my sister, my grandma, and I. She took pictures that day and those photos are now some of my most precious possessions. I knew that whenever I needed her she was just a phone call away.

Brooke and Kim
I was in Fairwinds Treatment Center in Clearwater Florida for two months. I was away from friends and family sick and alone. The whole staff was wonderful but if it was not for nurses Kim and Brooke, I know my recovery would have not been the same.
They not only took care of my medical needs but made myself and all the patients feel as if they were the only one there. They became like true friends and family members that wanted the best for us inpatient and on our road to recovery in the outside world. They always had time, laughter and advice to help us along and keep us in line.
I came to Fairwinds broke, just a shell of myself and Kim and Brooke helped me get "me."
A little piece of there kindness, heart and spirit is with me one goods and bad. They are like guardian angels

She works nights at the hospital but has her schedule so that she can take me to my doctor appointments and take care of her father who has sugar diabetis..Everyone who knows her thinks of her as 'their' nurse family member or not family member she takes care of us all. Right now she is at a meeting at a nursing home for her X-Mother in law who has had a stroke, Glenda has a heart so big, and no room for neglect. Glenda will research our illlness and go to bat for anyone of us. She is, in my heart and mind, a hero to us all. Glenda takes such loving care of everyone, friends and neighbors even call her if their animal is hurt, she will give comfort and go with them to the vets if needed. Karyn Brewer
My daughter, Karyn Brewer is an RN at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. She works in the level 3 NICU. I am amazed at some of the things that she does- she not only takes care of the tiniest, sickest babies, she works as a delivery room nurse for the NICU, as a Transport Nurse, going to the other hospitals and picking up sick babies, as an Ekmo specialist- taking care of the heart/lung bypass machine, and she works as a pallative care nurse, taking care not only of dying babies but preparing their families as well. She is one of the most compassinate and understanding people I've ever seen. She loves her job and does a wonderful job at handling the babies. She gives them love and care and tries to make their lives as good as possible. I don't know how many times she has struggled with losing one that she has cared for for weeks or months but then is there for the families and will comfort and care for the baby and them. She is not alone in the compassion and care that she shares with the little miracles, the other nurses she works with are also wonderful and caring. These nurses give their love and care everyday and deserve the respect and admiration of everyone. All nurses give of themselves everyday, but the nurses in the NICU are special in the attention they give to their "miracle babies", no matter how small or what physical problems they have, they are cared for and loved just like their own. NICU Nurses show God's love everyday and cares for his children with their hearts as well as their hands and minds. Thank you Karyn for being the wonderful daughter that you are and for being an inspiration to everyone and for the love and compassion you show every day. I love you. Mom

Monica Galbraith
My mom, Monica Galbraith, had a 60 year career as a nurse. She is 81 today and only retired at the age of 80. She got her education in England and moved to the United States early on in her career. She worked as an emergency room nurse, worked in doctor's offices, did homecare nursing, hospice nursing, you name it, she did it. She is the most caring person you'll ever meet. She is a 'caregiver' by nature and is always there to lend a helping hand to her friends, family and even strangers. She spent her whole life dedicated to the field of Nursing. She is now retired and living in Vero Beach, FL. Not an Orlando nurse, but surely deserving of recognition for so many years of excellent service to her patients. I hope you will consider her for this "Hero" nomination.

Gail Matthews
Have you ever met a person who has touched you and the lives of so many it’s almost impossible to put into words?
That person in my life and those at Round Lake Elementary School is Gail Matthews, affectionately known to all as “Nurse”.
Our Round Lake Family including Administrators, teachers, teachers’ assistants, parents and students seek Gail out for her medical advice, her friendship, her compassion and her wittiness. Even on days when her own medical conditions have her down Nurse is always available with a smile, that special shoulder, words of encouragement or advice.
In addition to the many duties she performs at our school she also has raised many dollars for the clinic and other areas by collecting and submitting Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup Labels for such things as a washer and dryer, Vision and hearing equipment, a portable blood pressure machine, a dish washer, cots, athletic gear and many other goodies. Lauren Ritchie from the Orlando Sentinel even acknowledged Gail with an article in the Lake Sentinel. (See Attached)
In August 2008 she also became my personal Angel. I was feeling dizzy and light headed and stopped by to have her check my blood pressure, upon checking it she arranged for someone to take me to the ER. In the next few days it was determined that I would need By Pass Surgery to correct a blockage. Without her and her help I most likely would have suffered a stroke, heart attack or worse. Many Thanks to my friend and Angel Nurse Gail-

He has done this since he was a student at Florida A & M University when this service that exceeds expectations allowed him to be honored with the Cathedral Award. Brenda Carter
This may sound crazy but here it goes. Brenda is married to my ex-husband Jim, who is the father of my 23 year old son. She is a kind and sweet person and would do anything for anyone. My ex recently found out that he had brain cancer and had an operation to remove it. Brenda never left his side while he's been in the hospital. My son was a mess the whole time, but she never left him with unanswered questions, as well as keeping me informed via text messaging while he was in surgery. Jim is doing great, he might be getting to go home next week, and I know that he will be getting plenty of TLC at home as well as in the hospital. I feel that Brenda is a jewel to her profession. There needs to be more nurses like her in the Florida hospitals. Thank You Brenda. Sonya Carter

Julie Joseph, RN
I was going through some rough injections and tests at Florida East reacently when a ray of sunshine walked into my room.
Nurse Julie was so kind and so tender that it made all the things I had to undergo less formidable.
Whenever she was in the room, the conversations between us were full of interesting topics. She was a good listener also.

Tracy Perkins
My Nurse Hero is a beautiful young lady. When my mother was hospitalized at Florida South in Orlando, Florida with a Torn Aorta, Tracy was the rock of our family. Tracy is my cousin and my mothers youngest sister's daughter. Eventhough this was her aunt in critical condition she continued to be professional as well as family. She made sure we understood what was going on and also made sure when we were a little impatient with the other nurses and staff that we didn't disrespect them or give them a hard time. She is a ICU nurse and that is a very demanding job. Not saying the other areas of nursing is not demanding. She continued her 12 hour shifts and made sure she was informed on my mothers condition. She had to make a lot of the decisions and by being a nurse she knew what could happen. Eventhough that was a very hard time, I know it would have been worse if she wouldn't have been there. I was in the waiting room and a woman was talking about this little nurse that was taking care of her father, saying how good and nice she was. I ask her what was the nurse name and she said Tracy. I was so proud to say that's my cousin. TRACY IS MY NURSE HERO!!!!

PICU staff at Arnold Palmer Hospital
My baby was born 23 weeks 6 days, as the last triplet out. He was in the NICU at Winnie Palmer for exactly 5 months. They told us that since they were born so early, they are more likely to get sick & if they do it'll most likely hit them hard. Well we got him out finally & two weeks later we were across the street at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. We went in on a Thursday & they sent him home because he just had a cough..so we thought. I brought him back Saturday morning, finding out he had Pnumonia real bad. Three days later, his H flu results came back positive. We've been here for two weeks now & he's getting better slowly each day. I thank all the nurses in the PICU who have worked with him. I don't favor one nurse over the other; I thank the whole staff! <3

NICU girls in 2C @ Winnie Palmer Hospital.
I got pregnant at 18 years old. Two weeks before my birthday I had my first sonagram done. They found two girls & a boy! I made it to 23 weeks 5 days when I went into labor. I told my mom about the cramps & she told me to call the Dr. I went in at South Seminole & was Ambulanced to Winnie Palmer shortly after. They weren't able to stop the labor, so when I was dialated to 7, they started getting prepared for this. I had the scary talk about how babies this early hardly make it & if they do, they can have multiple problems. I ended up getting a c-section close to 3 am. They were all out within 4 minutes of eachother :) The first girl, weighed 1 lb 9 oz, second girl weighed 1 lb 6 oz, & the last baby, the boy, weighed 1 lb 8 oz. At first, I was shy & didn't want to talk about anything with the nurses, but I wanted to know a lot of answers. The Nurses in NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Woman & Babies were really nice & made us feel comfortable. They didn't push us out of the way & told us everything they were doing. As time went on, we became real close with a lot of them, so close that they didn't want the babies to leave. We actually lost one of our girls January 9 & the nurses showed a lot of support & we knew they were as hurt as we were. One of them actually went to the service. Our babies were in the NICU for exactly 5 months. They have given us lots of things, shopped for them, have shown lots of support, & basically loved them like we did <3 Without them, we probably wouldn't have the two that made it.. So I appreciate all of the girls help & men that were in there, for saving our babies lives!!

Helen McRight, RN
I was devastated when I learned my mother, my closest friend, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. A dark cloud hung in that hospital room that day. Suddenly, the door to that room burst open and the room was filled with sunshine in the form of Helen McRight, RN, research Coordinator for M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She told us she was there to care for us and help us through this oh-so-difficult time in our lives. Every day she gave us some little something to hope for when hope seemed an illusion. She cried when we cried, she jumped for joy with us when tests/reports looked hopeful. She was an angel sent by God to us. She sang songs with us. When it seemed too much for me as I watched my mother fight the battle as she lay there in that sterile environment with a needle attached to the port in her chest watching what Helen called "mercy drops" rather than chemotherapy, I would hear Helen's voice saying; "Meet me across the hall in the bathroom." where she, on her knees, would lift my mom and me up before God for strength and guidance and mercy. My mother lost her battle with breast cancer seventeen years ago; but our "angel" remained. Nurse Helen McRight's care did not die when my mother did. She was there when my mother was laid to rest and she has been "there" through all the years since Mother died. When she made my mom that promise in the hospital room that dreadful day to carefor us it was a covenant she has kept even until this day. She remains a much loved friend to me and continues to come alongside me in whatever comes my way. She shares my joy in good times and cries with me in sad times. She holds me accountable before the Lord and lifts fervent prayers heavenward on my behalf when needed. She recently spent one year in training to add massage therapist to her repertoire solely for the purpose of being able to better comfort those who are blessed enough to come under her care and are suffering all the devastating discomforts whichchemotherapy can ravish on the human body. That is dedication way beyond the call of duty.
God surely smiled on me the day Helen McRight, RN entered my Mother's hospital room one day back in 1991. She is the truest example of an angel of mercy. I am not the only recipient of her loving kindness. I have seen her treat many, many others I'm the same manner. She is never too busy, too tired or too involved to stop whatever she is doing and run, not walk, to whomever has need of her. She is a professional and dedicated nurse; but, so much more than that--she is a friend who sticks closer than a sister and I thank God He allowed me to stumble onto one such as she. She has blessed my life time and again; and I know that one day there will be a very special "capping" ceremony in heaven for Helen McRight--nurse extrordinare.

denise vesco
denise is an amazing open heart surgery nurse at holmes regional in melbourne. daily she literally holds someone's life in her hands. she is conscientous to the point she views every patient as a member of her family. every evening she studies the notes on the preferences of the doctor she is next to assist. it takes a very special, strong person to do what denise and every open heartl nurse does, and does without praise or the appreciation of the attending surgeon. i could never even think of doing what denise does each day. i have no doubt she is the nurse i want next to me should i ever need this type of surgery. thank you for considering denise. she is my hero and i am proud to say, my sister.!

Geraldine Black RN
I went to work for a home health agency here in FL shortly after moving here from Texas. It was a new era in home health. Clients were coming home with IVs and other sophisticated paraphenalia. There were multiple times when I needed assistance with starting IVs on little old people with tiny veins. Gerri was the manager of my branch and spent most of her time at a desk or out marketing. Not once when I called in with a problem did she hesitate to come to my assistance day or night. She even volunteered her arms to let me 'practice'!She is multi-talented and never thinks about her own needs.
She and her husband 'Blackie' were some of the first volunteers when the Amtrack derailed above Seville providing first aid & triage.
Not so many years ago she adopted SIX grand children when their parents were no longer able to care for them. I can't imagine taking on such a task.
When I think of being ill I can't think of anyone I would rather have care for me.
Geraldine Black is MY nurse hero.

Ulea
Our daughter had a seizure. She was out running errands with our two grandchildren. A paramedic called us enroute to Lakeland Regional Hosp. I asked where our grandchildren were and all he could tell us was that Polk County Fire Department had the children, ages 7 mos. and 4 yrs. He couldnt tell me which fire station. I made alot of calls with no luck. Finally my husband called the hospital. He found out our daughter had arrived and was in the I.C.Unit. The hospital operator connected us with a I.C.U. Nurse named Ulea. She was able to give us a little info on our daughter, and when we told her we were trying to find our grandchildren she said she would find the EMT's and/or ask our daughter if possible. But no matter what she would find out where our grand children were and call us back. We knew in our hearts that our grandchildren were safe with the firemen, but we knew the 4 year old would be scared and traumatized by what he had witnessed with his mommy. Elea called us back with the info very promptly and we were able to get a family member there to get them. We left for the hospital, Ulea told us to have the receptionist call her as soon as we arrived at the hospital. Boy am I glad! The E.R. waiting room was wall to wall chaos! The I.C.U. had patients lined all down the hallway. But this wonderful Nurse understood our panic for our grandchildren and daughter and took time from her hectic workplace to help us. She was kind, calming, beautiful and compassionate. When we left we thanked her again and she pointed to a small picture on a pin on her uniform and said if that had been her grandchild she would hope someone would help her. She is our Hero!

Mrs. Betty Flood
Betty was raised in an orphanage, met her husband Buddy when they were teenagers.
They married young and were the most beautiful "in love" couple I have ever known.
Betty lost Buddy to Alzheimers, she was with him every day and when it was time for him to live in a health care facility she never missed a time to be there at dinner time. She would also bring some of the other patients to church on Sunday, which is no small feat.
Today she takes care of Buddy's sister who also has Alzheimers.
Betty works for one of the gastoroenterolists in Winter Garden. When
it came time for me to have the dread
colonoscopy I told her how scared I was. She
assured me it wasn't bad. The day of my procedure I was surprised to see Betty standing beside me as they took me in. It was her day off but came in to be with me.
She is quiet, unassuming, has a great sense of humor, takes in homeless cats and dogs.
has them spayed or nuetered and finds homes for them.
Betty Flood is a Registered Nurse but she is most importantly a Registered Angel. We need more like her.
Thank you,
Sandi Johnston

BEVERLY BOESCH
My mom is the best nurse I feel because no matter when, who, where or what she will pull over and help in a scene at an accident or help out when she can at a restaurant. My mom and I was on a plane 2 years ago going to Seattle Washington and there was a passenger on the plane having a heart attack in flight she got up from her chair and did cpr and kept him alive until we emergency landed in texas when we almost crashed from coming in to fast. My mom will pull her car side ways on the street and stop traffic if she sees some one at need at a scene of an accident and will help as much as she can.My mom and I were driving down the road and there was a baby about to fall into a storm drain and my mom saved her. I feel that she is not just a nurse she is a nurse hero!

Victoria Proscia
Victoria is 65 years old. She has been a nurse forever. She works at LMRC in Leesburg, and has had a varity of differemt positions/responsibilites during her career as a nurse. I believe being a nurse is a calling! I could never do or work the long hours Victoria works, often without a break. But her work does not end at the hospital, she nurses others in her neighborhood, and even I have callled her for advice in my neighborhood and she is always available to help. During the past five years, she has lost her 28 yr old daughter to a brain anurism, thenn a 38 year old son who was in a coma for months then died, a husband who has recently endured treatment for reoccuring cancer but this has not oher from her duties as a nurse. Yes, she puts her family and God before all other obligations, but I have since her operate with love to each and every person she nurses. Feel free to check with her superiors at Leesburg Regional Hospital. I believe she deserses recognition for her faithfulness in servicing others with the talents she has been given.

Alexis Hearn
Our daughter, Kylie, was born at 23 weeks and ended up with a 200 day stay in the NICU at FL Hospital in Orlando.
Almost immediately, Alexis signed up as one of her primary nurses.
She's so caring and would always take extra time out to explain things to us or reassure us that things would be ok - even coming to visit us and Kylie on her surgery days when she had the day off.
Sometimes she would even surprise us and she would be able to be in the surgery itself which would give us that extra layer of comfort knowing that she was also in there looking after Kylie.
Alexis is so knowledgable and was able to help us and Kylie more than we'll ever be able to explain or repay.
Kylie came home from the NICU back on 11/15/2010 and since then has been back into the hospital mutliple times - sometimes it was a day, sometimes a week, and one time it was a month.
No matter how long it was, we knew Alexis would be visiting her and checking up on the other nurses to make sure they were taking care of Kylie - which really helped us too since we knew that Alexis knew her so well so we wanted to know what she thought about certain situations.
Without a doubt, Alexis is definitely a hero to us, and most importantly, to Kylie.

Donalyn Stubblefield
We recently had our daughter at 23 weeks and 2 days and she went through more than I could even fathom going through myself.
But without the help and care of all her nurses, especially her 3 primary nurses that cared for her since pretty much the beginning - and Donalyn going the extra mile and above and beyond pretty much everyday for us, I'm not sure we would have made it through the experience as sane as we are now.
We're the type that would constantly call the NICU every couple hours (if not more often depending on what was going on) and we would ask so many questions I'm sure it would anyone crazy.
But Donalyn is one of those rare, special nurses that just cares so much and she would know exactly what we're going to ask and when we would call.
She knew us so well and didn't want us to ever call in and not get answers so if she had to get up from her desk to tend to her other assignment or would go to lunch, she would leave post it notes with the receptionist or the nurse next to her so we could get all the information we wanted even if she was on her break.
And often times she would even bring her phone in with her during her lunch or her break just for us so she could tell us how our daughter was doing.
Between the 15 surgeries and 7 months in the NICU alone, Donalyn was there every step of the way and never hesitated to call us and ask how we were doing and make sure we didn't have any other questions.
After being released from the NICU back in mid November 2010, Kylie (our daughter) has since been back in the hospital close to 10 different times.
Every single time, Donalyn came to visit her every night she was working during her break instead of going somewhere to relax.
Having a familiar face come see her (and us) made such a difference and kept us all positive through the whole experience.
Kylie's home today and just celebrated her first birthday a few days ago - of course, Donalyn was there to celebrate with us since we've basically adopted her into our family along with her other primaries.
There's so much more to tell, but I'm sure I'll run out of room on here eventually so if you need more information, please call.
Donalyn is definitely a hero to us - more than she'll ever know.

Dawn Wiler RN
I have worked with Dawn many years and she always takes the time to listen, to go above and beyond and put people first. I wrote this poem for all nurses in honor of Nurses Day: Nightengales Song- I had heard of a women who long before, had cared for soldiers wounded in war. From early dawn till late at night, she nursed their wounds by candle light. And as she worked and as she cared to each one she would say this prayer: I promise to help you all I can with all my strength with all I am, I will do my best in all I do and follow my heart as I care for you. Time has come and years have gone yet still today her cause lives on in those we touch through out the day, in a quiet hour you can hear her say: I promise to help you all I can with all my strength with all I am, I will do my best in all I do and follow mu heart as I care for you. The day will come to pass on the light, it has shined in our hearts through out our lives, tho the people we've cared for have long since gone with in our hearts you will hear their song: you promised to help us all you could with all your strength we knew you would, you gave your best in all you did and followed your heart so we could live. This is an original poem by Pam Poe LPN.

Frances Parris RN; Norma Stout LPN, Oscar Matos LPN
Dear Committee,
I would like to nominate three nurses: Nurse Parris, Nurse Stout, and Nurse Matos who work with my students daily at UPMS in Orlando Florida.
Nurse Parris and Nurse Stout are OCPS school nurses, and are responsible for the daily care and every health need of my precious medically fragile students; as well as for the entire school population of over a thousand students and staff. They offer the utmost care and maintain exemplary professionalism at all times. Oscar Matos is an agency nurse who joined my classroom this year; and remains with one of my student the entire school day.
Going of and beyond nursing- These three nurses continually support daily events, and their presence undoubtly contributes to student success. For instance, last year Nurse Parris and her husband created a Butterfly Garden in the small patio area attached to our building (on their own time). As a result, our students nurtured Painted Ladies and Monarch eggs, observing the life-cycle firsthand. Nurse Parris actually taught an entire lesson and was right beside each student when the butterflies were released in the garden. Again this year, Nurse Parris created the garden; and we anticipate another success.
Every year, Nurse Stout joins Nurse Parris to teach our students about the human body, using props and visuals to support undersanding. This year Nurse Matos joined them in their quest to be a part of student learning, as he taught a lesson about germs and safety.
True caregivers who go beyond job description, they enrich the lives of their clients in undescribable ways. The sparkle in my students eyes when they hear their voices and the intensity when they observe them teaching is so moving. The way each nurse is recognized when they enter my room, and the comfort I enjoy knowing they are there for us, is priceless...
I thank you for creating this nomination process and giving the community an opportunity particiapte.
Respectfully,
Mary Lackey

Helen Hill
I am nominating my nurse manager Helen Hill. Helen is the manager of the pediatric floor where I work in Ocala, Fla. (Munroe Regional Medical Center). Helen has such a passion for what she does, and is a true advocate for the pediatric population. She is not the kind of nurse or manager who doesnt help out on the floor, many days you will see Helen answering phones, putting in orders, helping with IV starts or any of the other things we do on a daily basis. I am just so honored to be working for her, and have her as an inspiration in my life. I hope to be one ounce of the pediatric nurse Helen Hill is. Thank you for your consideration.

Michelle MacDonald
My hero is also my mother. She is an RN and single parent working the late night shift from 7pm until 7am to make enough money to support herself and to help me through my tough times. I am 22 and 8.5 months pregnant. I was a manager for a Blockbuster video store that shut down. I am without a job and struggling. She constantly comes home weak and worn down but still manages to keep a smile on her face. I feel that she doesnt get enough appreciation for her job well done. Her patients love her and often times try to give her gifts and cards of appreciation. She is now doing a preceptorship helping another aspiring nurse learn her way. As a 22 year single mother with the energy to do what she does night after night with a smile on her face, I want her to receive recognition and praise. She deserves it.
